Smokey Toy Bag

Even the COW Wonders about Toy Bag Dependence….

Written by Julie Higginbotham, Senior Case Coordinator, Mecklenburg County CDSA

You guessed it….the Mecklenburg County CDSA has been discussing another Concept of the Week, or COW!  This one was about how to promote Natural Learning Environment Practices by not relying on toy bags during early intervention visits.  We started with this video where Families Talk About the Toy Bag so we could start with their perspective.  Then we moved on to some of these points to consider…

Only YOU can Prevent Toy Bag Dependence!

  • Schedule visits to occur during actual child, family, or classroom activities and routines;

  • Support the parent or caregiver in using the child’s interests and familiar items to promote participation in the activity;  and

  • Support the adult in fostering child participation.

We’ve talked about this a lot as we’ve been working to move toward more evidence-based practices with families. So, what do you think?  Let us know in the comments below so we can all share in the conversation together!
